Fishkill, N.Y. - After being shut out by the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (6-4) 7-0 last night, the Hudson Valley Renegades (6-3) returned the favor earlier this evening. Starter Tony Peguero (W, 2-0, 0.00) struck out five batters in six shutout innings and Chad Orvella pitched two shutout innings for his New York-Penn League-leading third save of the year as the 'Gades beat the Scrappers 2-0. The Renegades broke their three-game losing streak in front of 4,460 fans at Dutchess Stadium.
Hudson Valley broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 5th inning. Center fielder Nate Dion's RBI single off reliever Matt Davis (L, 0-2, 2.45) brought left fielder Mitch Jones home with the only run the 'Gades would need. Dion finished the night 3 for 4 with an RBI and his third stolen base of the year. In the bottom of the 8th, first baseman Gabe Martinez doubled down the right field line, scoring right fielder Matt Rico with an insurance run.
Tonight's game included a very special Flower Boy giveaway, sponsored by Flowers By Rene and Mid-Hudson Limousine. Renegades groundskeeper Tom Hubmaster (as Flower Boy) and intern Jesse "Joe Pesci" Cazakoff (as the Angel of Love) honored Hubmaster's old friend Josh Noviskey. Noviskey, the designated hitter for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, was also tonight's Denny's K-Man.
The Renegades and the Scrappers conclude their three-game series tomorrow night at Dutchess Stadium. Probable starters are Aaron Gangi (0-0, 7.71) for Hudson Valley and Chad Durbin (1-1, 2.25) for the visitors. First pitch is scheduled for 7:11 p.m. and there will be post-game fireworks.
