
Cardinals Defeat Oneonta

Tonight at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) defeated the Oneonta Tigers (Detroit Tigers) by a score of 5-3. With the win the Cardinals climb to 2-6, and Oneonta drops to 6-3. Rich Scalamandre nabbed his first win (1-0), as he entered in the 5th inning to spell the Cardinals. Roberto Batista picked up his first save after saving 13 games last season. The loss drops Tiger Tom Lyons to 1-1 on the year.
The first two runs scored on a 2nd inning triple by Melvin Falu plating Jose Virgil and Casey Grimm. Oneonta evened the score in the 5th inning with an Eric Rodland RBI-hit-by-pitch followed by an RBI-groundout by Robert Huddleston. At 2-2 Rodland tripled home Vince Blue, who reached on an error by Billy Schmitt. In the 7th inning, Kevin Estrada drove in both Zach Smithlin, pinch running for Matt Pagnozzi, and Tee Thomas. Casey Grimms 8th inning walk enabled Omar Pena to pinch-run around the bases. He moved up on a wild pitch and a passed ball, before crossing the plate on Daylon Monettes single. This final run concluded the scoring for the evening at 5-3 with the Cardinals on top for the second night in a row.
The Cardinals continue the series with Oneonta tomorrow evening, Friday June 27th, at 7:15 PM. It will be the final time Oneonta and New Jersey play in the 2003 regular season. The promotion is a postgame fireworks display courtesy of Condit Toyota World and Condit Ford, Lincoln Mercury World.
