Expos Blanked Again
June 26, 2003 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
AUBURN, NY --- Vermont's offensive woes continued on Thursday night as the Auburn Doubledsays shutout the Expos 3-0 in New York-Penn League action at Falcon Park.
Vermont was able to manage just five hits a day after being shutout on four hits by the Doubledays. The Expos have now been shutout in three of the four games on the roadtrip and for the fourth time in 10 games this season in falling to 1-9 overall.
The Expos have now gone 19.1 innings since they last scored on a two-run homer from Brad Ditter on Tuesday night at Lowell. Since scoring four runs in the fifth inning of Sunday's 4-1 win over the Spinners, Vermont has scored just 3 runs over the last 39 innings. The Expos also are now hitting .189 as a team and, with no walks and 11 strikeouts on Thursday, have walked just 14 times with 90 strikeouts in their 10 games (Vermont pitchers have 49 walks and 72 strikeouts).
Expos starter Devin Perrin limited the Doubledays, who entered the game with a team batting average of .319, to just two hits over four innings. But Perrin walked four Auburn batters and three of those came around to score.
A one-out base on balls came around to score an unearned run in the second inning as Paul Richmond scored from second on an error by Henry Encarnacion trying to complete a double play that would have ended the inning.
Perrin walked Aaron Hill to leadoff the fourth and then gave up a double to Clint Johnston. Alex Blackburn followed with a sacrifice fly to give Auburn a 2-0 lead, but Perrin got a pair of groundouts to get out of any further trouble.
Back-to-back walks and a sacrifice bunt/fielder's choice to start the fifth inning loaded the bases with no outs and knocked Perrin out of the game. Jeremy Plexico came on in relief to strikeout the first batter, give up a sacrifice fly and then another strikeout after a walk reloaded the bases to end the inning with the Doubledays ahead 3-0.
The Expos will wrap up the three-game series, and the five-game roadtrip, at Auburn on Friday night with Clint Everts (1-1) on the mound. Vermont returns to Centennial Field on Saturday night to begin a five-game homestand with the Tri-City ValleyCats.
