Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - Brian Rembisz and Will Krout both have a reputation for working quickly. Both starters lived up to the billing as Rembisz outdueled Krout in an astouding two hours and 19 minutes in a 3-1 victory for Quebec. Gary (12-12) now sits four games behind first-place Winnipeg in the Central.
Rembisz entered the start struggling with a 7.20 ERA through his first four starts. Working very quickly, he faced the minimum in five of his eight full innings. Rembisz (1-0) held the RailCats to one run on a season-low four hits in 8 =A8=F7 innings with two walks and two strikeouts, throwing 122 pitches before exiting in the ninth.
The Capitales scored the game's first run againstl Krout in the second inning. The first two hitters of the inning reached on a double and a single. With runners on second and third, Patrick D'Aoust grounded out to third to plate Royce Consigli.
Gary wasted no time tying the game as Craig Maddox pounded his first home run of the season to left field on the fourth pitch of the second inning off of Rembisz. Maddox is the first RailCat other than Cristian Guerrero to hit a home run this season.
After avoiding trouble with the bases loaded and one out in the third, Krout found himself in hot water once again in the fourth. Krout allowed back-to-back singles to start the inning but retired the next two batters.. With two out, Jeff Helps hit a grounder up the middle just past Chase Tucker diving at second and into center for a two-run single to give Quebec a 3-1 advantage that they would not relinquish.
Krout (1-3) took the tough-luck loss after working out of several jams to hold the Capitales to three runs on 10 hits in seven innings. The RailCats turned two double plays behind him as Krout walked one and struck out three in his best start of the season.
The RailCats offense struggled to muster any offense against Rembisz who did not allow two base runners in any inning after the second. The 'Cats managed two-out singles in each the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but were unable to score.
Both Adam Klein and Mike Massaro had on-base streaks come to a close. Klein saw a 20-game on-base streak end, while Massaro failed to reach base in a game for the first time this season; ending a 23-game streak.
Brian Kolb also saw his 10-game hit come to an end with an 0-for-3 performance, while Drew Martinez was 1-for-3 to extend his hit streak to 11.
The series rubber match is Wednesday night at 7:10 p.m. Left-hander Alain Quijano (3-2, 5.08) will pitch for Gary against Quebec righty Charle Rosario (0-0, 0.00). It's Dollar Wednesday at U. S.
