Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings would like to congratulate big defenseman Griffin Reinhart on his selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Reinhart was selected 4th overall by the New York Islanders and becomes the Oil Kings highest NHL draft pick in the team history. Reinhart is also the second Edmonton Oil Kings to head to the Islanders organization since fan favourite, Swedish forward Robin Figren.
In 2011-12 Reinhart set career highs with 58 games played, 12 goals, 24 assists, 36 points, a plus/minus rating of +23 and 38 penalty minutes. He was named an Oil Kings Assistant Captain and helped lead the team to their first WHL Championship in the modern era.
Reinhart was ranked 6th overall by Central Scouting heading into the draft. He participated in the 2012 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Kelowna scoring a goal to lead Team Orr to victory. The 2012 WHL Champions had five players including Reinhart who were ranked in the ISS Final Rankings entering this weekend. Forward Henrik Samuelsson was the second highest ranked at 27th.
The Oil Kings had a franchise record four players selected at last summer's NHL Entry Draft in Minnesota. Two players happened to go in consecutive picks in the third round with the Carolina Hurricanes selecting Keegan Lowe with the 73rd pick and the Edmonton Oilers choosing Travis Ewanyk with the 74th pick. The next to go was Michael St. Croix in the 4th round, 106th overall to the New York Rangers. The Calgary Flames then selected goaltender Laurent Brossoit in the 6th round with the 164th pick.
Edmonton's highest NHL draft pick prior to this season was Captain Mark Pysyk. (Buffalo, 23rd, 2010). The Oil Kings first ever NHL draft pick in the modern era was Dallas Stars pick Tomas Vincour selected 129th overall in the 2009 NHL draft.
