Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA - The United States Hockey League has named Saints forward James Reeder the Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2023-24 season.
Reeder is the fifth Fighting Saint to earn the honor since the USHL began recognizing academic achievements in the 2016-17 season. Reeder follows last season's Scholar-Athlete Lucas St. Louis to earn Dubuque back-to-back seasons with the award for the second time.
"We put a strong emphasis on academics in Dubuque," said general manager Kalle Larsson. "Our assistant coaches and education coordinator, JoAnne Gibson, work very hard making sure the players have all the resources necessary to succeed in the classroom."
"Jay Reeder's ability to perform on the ice and in school is impressive, and we are proud of him for winning this year's award."
Reeder excelled in the classroom at the same time as taking a step forward on the ice this season. Due to representing the United States at the World Jr. A Challenge in December, Reeder played eight fewer games than he did in his rookie campaign a year ago. However, the Univ. of Denver commit still eclipsed his season point total by 26, scoring 20 goals and assisting on 40 this season.
As the Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Reeder earned a place on the USHL All-Academic Team alongside another teammate.
Colin Frank was named to the USHL All-Academic Team as well, earning the honor in his first full USHL season. The Univ. of Connecticut commit scored nine goals this season and has made an impact throughout the playoffs.
The Fighting Saints have placed a significant focus on academics and have invested resources into helping all players succeed on and off of the ice. Led by Education Coordinator JoAnne Gibson, the Saints have consistently seen positive results in the classroom.
In the eight seasons in which the league has recognized academic achievements, the Saints have had 16 players named to the USHL All-Academic Team. Dubuque has had multiple members on the All-Academic team in each of the last seven seasons and has made up one-third of all USHL All-Academic Team players.
