May 15, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL) News Release
The United States Hockey League announced today that Dubuque Fighting Saints forward James Reeder has been named 2023 USHL Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The award is given annually to the "most exemplary student in the USHL" Reeder becomes the fifth Fighting Saint to win the award, joining Lucas St. Louis (2023), Connor Kurth (2021), Mason McCormick (2019) and Alex Steeves (2018).
"We put strong emphasis on academics in Dubuque," said Dubuque General Manager Kalle Larsson. "Our assistant coaches and academic coordinator, Joanne Gibson, work very hard making sure the players have all resources necessary to succeed in the classroom. Jay Reeder's ability to perform on the ice and in school is impressive, and we are proud of him for winning this year's award."
Reeder, who registered 60 points on 20 goals and 40 assists in 63 games during the 2023-24 regular season, boasts a cumulative 4.09 grade point average and is committed to play college hockey at Denver. A native of Glenview, Ill., Reeder had 10 points on eight goals and two assists in helping lead Team USA to a Bronze Medal at this year's World Junior A Challenge.
"Jay has done an outstanding job managing his time and excelling both on the ice and in the classroom since he arrived in Dubuque," said Dubuque Head Coach Kirk MacDonald. "It is a tremendous honor for Jay to be recognized as the USHL Scholar-Athlete and we couldn't be happier for him."
"Being an online student can be challenging in many ways while also giving students the flexibility they need to meet academic and extracurricular goals," said Maryjo Williams, an English teacher in the Dubuque Community School District. "Jay has been successfully managing his rigorous academic program with his rigorous hockey program. Despite his busy schedule, not only has Jay proven to manage his time well, but he has also held himself to a high standard, receiving excellent grades in his AP classes and maintaining a superior cumulative GPA. Jay is young man who demonstrates a high level of honesty and integrity. Hockey is a significant part of his life, and this has forced him to be independent and a problem-solver. He is a leader on his team because he brings his determination and integrity onto the ice as well. Others on the team look up to Jay as someone they trust."
