PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves have announced their Farm Bureau Player & Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Sunday, May 13. Mississippi Braves outfielder, Michael Reed and right-handed pitcher, Kyle Wright have been selected for the weekly awards.
Reed, the 25-year old outfielder, is currently batting .356 (36-for-101) on the season. The right-handed hitting Reed ranks fourth in batting among all Southern League hitters, is tied with Jackson's Galli Cribbs and Jacksonville's Mote Harris for the second most runs scored in the Southern League (24) and leads the Southern League with a .467 on-base percentage. For the week ending Sunday, May 13, Reed batted .360 (9-for-25) and posted a .484 on-base percentage in seven games played while collecting three doubles, nine runs scored, and one stolen base.
Reed also leads the Mississippi Braves in eight offensive categories, including: hits (36), doubles (9), total bases (51), base on balls (19), stolen bases (5), on-base percentage (.467), slugging percentage (.505), on-base slugging percentage (.972) and is tied with teammates Travis Demeritte and Tyler Marlette as the team leader in home runs (2). The Cedar Park, TX native was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fifth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Leander High School (Leander, TX).
Wright, the 22-year old right-handed pitcher who is currently rated as the No. 2 overall prospect in the Atlanta Braves organization and the No. 27 overall prospect in Minor League Baseball, checks in this week with a 2-4 win/loss record and a 4.03 ERA. Wright has appeared in eight games with the Mississippi Braves in 2018 with all eight appearances being starts. Wright's eight starts are a team high among M-Braves pitchers this season and currently tie him with nine other Southern League pitchers as the league leader in games started.
Wright leads the Mississippi Braves pitching staff in innings pitched (38.0), ranks second in strikeouts (39), and is tied with fellow M-Braves pitchers, Josh Graham, Touki Toussaint and Kelvin Vasquez as the team leader in wins (2). For the week ending Sunday, May 13, the ballyhooed right-hander posted a 1-1 record and a 3.55 ERA in two starts. In his two starts combined, Wright tossed 12.2 innings and allowed 13 hits, five runs, five earned runs, issued five walks, and struck out 13. A native of Huntsville, AL, Wright was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the first round (fifth overall) in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Vanderbilt University.
