RedWolves Walk off on Blowfish
July 22, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Florence, S.C. (July 21, 2015) -- A walk-off home run by Florence's Ray Lanners ended a 12-inning affair at Cormell Field as the RedWolves defeated the Lexington County Blowfish 7-6 on Tuesday night.
Extras would go without a hit, aside from one single in the tenth inning, until Lanners' home run ended the game in walk-off fashion.
Brandon White (Lander University) stymied the RedWolves over two innings of work, preventing the winning run from scoring in the bottom of the ninth inning by striking out Drew Wharton and Lanners.
A steady rain fell as the Blowfish rallied while trailing 6-2, scoring four runs in the seventh inning to tie the game. Gene Cone (University of South Carolina) tripled, Jared Williams (University of South Carolina) brought him in with a single. Three walks, an error and a fielder's choice later, the game was all knotted up.
Pinstripe Jersey Night on Saturday
Rain forced an error that put Dalton Duty (University of Central Florida) aboard, as Florence pitcher Zac Burke slipped and fell while trying to throw Duty out at first base.
One chance to put Florence away went by the wayside late. Williams would be stranded on third in the eighth inning with one out as the potential go-ahead run.
Lexington County took an early lead against former Blowfish pitcher Josh Reagan. After Williams stole second. Cone stole home on the same play to start the scoring. J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) would smack an RBI single into right field to score Williams and take the 2-0 lead.
Florence scored six unanswered runs after that point. Three of them occurred in the first inning due in part to a two-run single by Andrew Castillo, and an RBI single by Wharton. The RedWolves would score one run in the third, fourth and sixth innings to extend their largest lead of the night.
This game proved to be the second time that the Florence RedWolves have walked off against the Lexington County Blowfish; both of them home runs, both to left field, and both in extras at Cormell Field.
Cone, for the second straight game, finished one hit away from the cycle. His 4-for-6 effort at the plate upped his batting average to .533 and on-base percentage to .611 in just seven games. It also proved to be the Coastal Plain League's Offensive Line of the Night.
After a day off on Wednesday, the Blowfish will return to Lexington County Baseball Stadium on Thursday night to host the Asheboro Copperheads. The Blowfish will celebrate Riverbanks Zoo Night in honor of National Zoo Week.
The Blowfish will also host Pinstripe Jersey Night on Saturday, where the team will be wearing special pinstriped uniforms that pay tribute to Lexington, River Bluff, Pelion, Gilbert and White Knoll high schools. All proceeds from the silent auction for these one-of-a-kind uniforms will benefit the Lexington District One Educational Foundation. After the game, fans will experience a Taylor Swift-themed fireworks extravaganza.
Both games start at 7:05 p.m.
