Wilmington Sharks News Release

Florence, S.C. - Despite Wilmington (13-10) defense stranding 15 Florence RedWolves (8-12) runners on base, the visiting Sharks fell 3-0 at American Legion Stadium.

The Sharks threatened to bite first in the second inning after they loaded the bases with nobody out. However, a ground ball back to the pitcher started a rare double play that went from pitcher to catcher to first baseman. A walk juiced the bags again, but a grounder to first ended the threat as Wilmington left three runners on.

Scoring started in the fourth for Florence, although the two runs that were scored both went as unearned. A hit by pitch, a stolen base and another hit by pitch loaded the bases with one out. As Lee Wilson knocked a grounder over to second base, Casey Goss picked up the ball and tagged his bag before trying to turn the double play with a tough throw to first that bounced away and allowed the first two scores of the game.

Ross Whitley put together a solid start for the Sharks on the mound, going four scoreless innings with two unearned runs allowed on a pair of walks and just two hits to go along with three hit batsmen. He struck out seven and took the loss.

Only one other run came across for either team, when Florence's Ryan Ford hit a two-out single, then scored when the next two batters each singled.

In the top of the ninth inning, Alex Freedman and Andrew Valencia started with a walk and a single, but neither could score as the next three batters went down in order.

The Sharks continue a four game road trip tomorrow at Peninsula, followed by games in Petersburg and Edenton before returning home to face Team USA on Tuesday. For more on the Sharks, visit wilmingtonsharks.com, find Sharky Sharks on Facebook and follow @ILMSharks on Twitter.
