Florence RedWolves News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.-The Florence RedWolves (19-18, 4-6 second half) used an offensive explosion, including a stretch of 14 unanswered runs, to dominate the Fayetteville SwampDogs (15-22, 3-7 second half), 16-7 on Saturday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium.

Nick Nunziato (Belmont Abbey) and Andrew Castillo (Tennessee-Martin) led the way for the RedWolves, with Nunziato going 2-for-4, with two runs scored and four RBI, and Castillo going 3-for-5, with three runs scored and two RBI. Both homered during the game.

Early on, it didn't look like the RedWolves night. Florence went down in order in the first, before the SwampDogs scored four runs in the bottom half, scoring on an error, a two-RBI double by KiJana Madden (Spartanburg Methodist), and a wild pitch, giving Fayetteville an early 4-0 lead.

The momentum changed toward the RedWolves in the second, when Nunziato led off with a walk, and Castillo's second homer of the season cut the Fayetteville lead to 4-2.

In the third the RedWolves scored a pair without a hit, as SwampDogs starter Zach Wimmer (USC Aiken) and reliever Will Bice (Kennesaw State) both seemingly lost their control, combining for five consecutive walks, with walks by Kent Rollins (Georgia Southern) and Ray Lanners (Methodist) scoring runs, tying the game, 4-4.

In the fourth, Kyle Prats (Campbell) bunted for a leadoff single, before Nunziato launched his first homer of the season, giving Florence a 6-4 lead.

Chaz Pal (USC Aiken) reached on an error to lead off the fifth, before advancing to second on a Rollins sacrifice bunt, and scoring on an RBI single by

Lanners, increasing the lead to 7-4.

After the RedWolves stranded a pair in the sixth, Lanners led off the seventh with an infield hit, and Prats walked. Both scored when Ben Holland (Lee) doubled. After Castillo singled, moving Holland to third, both scored on an error, making the score 11-4.

In the eighth, Lanners singled, then scored on an RBI single by Chris Adams (Lee). After Prats singled, both Adams and Prats scored on a two-RBI double by Nunziato, giving the RedWolves a 14-4 advantage.

While the RedWolves were scoring effectively in nearly every inning, Tyler Haswell (South Carolina), who came in to relieve RedWolves starter Andrew Reardon (Lander) with two outs in the second, was having an excellent appearance. Haswell threw six innings, allowing just three runs (two earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out seven.

The runs allowed by Haswell came in the eighth. Tanner Woods (Chowan) reached on an infield single, and Demetrius Webb (Indiana) walked. Both scored on a double by Branden Boggetto (SE Missouri State), who scored on a single by Jimmy Faul (Louisville), making the score 14-7.

The RedWolves scored the final two runs of the game in the ninth. Matt Williams (South Carolina) walked, Pal doubled, moving Williams to third. Williams scored on a sacrifice fly by Lanners, who finished with three RBI, and Pal, who had moved to third on the sacrifice, scored on a wild pitch, giving the RedWolves the 16-7 lead which would be the final score.

The two teams combined for 23 runs, 24 hits, six errors, 22 runners left on base, and 15 walks in the game, which took four hours and three minutes to complete.

Haswell picked up the win, improving to 3-2, while Nolan Mullen (Furman) suffered his first loss of the season, dropping to 0-1.

The win gives the RedWolves a two-game winning streak, following a stretch of 11 losses the previous 13 games.

Saturday's game was the final game for both teams before the CPL All-Star Break, which is Sunday and Monday, with the CPL All-Star Game and FanFest being hosted by the RedWolves at Sparrow Stadium.

Festivities begin on Sunday with FanFest, beginning at 4 p.m., which includes inflatables and carnival games, player autographs, a concert by OutShyne at 6:15, and the CPL Home Run Derby at 7:30. The All-Star Game is on Monday, with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. for a 7:15 first pitch.
