Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Sarasota, FL) - Sarasota swatted twelve hits and cruised 11-3 over the Vero Beach Dodgers at Ed Smith Stadium Tuesday night. Reds catcher John Purdom drove in five runs on a 3-5 night that included his second home run of the season. The series continues Wednesday night at 7:00 PM.
The Reds scored early and often against the Dodgers. The first six Sarasota hitters reached base against Vero Beach starter Jonathan Figueroa and three of them scored. Jeremiah Piepkorn highlighted the inning with an RBI double. Purdom led off the second with his first hit of the night and scored on a triple from Paul Janish.
Cole Bruce punched a solo home run to left field in the second inning. He later doubled in David Nicholson, who led off the sixth with a double. The only other run came when Carlos Santana led off the fifth inning with a double and Jamie Hoffmann singled him home.
Sarasota scored twice in the third on a 2-out single from Purdom. Jay Garthwaite added a two-run homer in the fourth inning, which was the final frame for Figueroa. The Dodger lefty surrendered eight runs on eight hits and five walks, though he also struck out five.
Purdom struck again in the fifth against reliever Albenis Castillo. The catcher drove a three-run homer over the wall in left to put the Reds on top 11-2 at the time. Castillo settled down to pitch a scoreless sixth. Kyle Wilson blanked the Reds in the seventh. Then infielder Jimmy Rohan, in his first game back from AA-Jacksonville, came in to pitch and allowed just one baserunner in the eighth.
