RedHawks Sign Four, Acquire Two Other Players

FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have made several roster moves in the past week as the team readies for the 2015 American Association season.

The RedHawks have signed OF Ryan Mathews, OF Chad Mozingo, INF Brent Peterson and LHP Mike Mason; re-acquired INF Frank Salerno from the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League for RHP Alex Powers; acquired the rights to INF Adalberto Santos from the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League; traded INF Mikey Reynolds to the York Revolution of the Atlantic League for a player to be named later and released INF Anthony Kaskadden.

Mathews, 25, has spent the past three years in the Oakland Athletics organization. In 2014, he batted .269 with 18 doubles, three triples, 12 home runs, 42 RBIs and 36 runs scored in 92 games with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Midwest League (A). He appeared in one game with the Midland RockHounds of the Texas League (Double-A) this season.

Mozingo, 26, joins the RedHawks after spending 2014 with the Lincoln Saltdogs. He batted .283 with nine doubles, three triples, six home runs, 34 RBIs and 42 runs scored in 75 games. In addition, Mozingo stole 21 bases in 24 attempts and posted a .380 on-base percentage. Mozingo began his professional career in 2010 after being selected by the Washington Nationals in the 20th round of that year's draft after spending three years at Rice University (Tex.). He played with the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League in 2012 and 2013, and also played 27 games with the Grand Prairie AirHogs in 2013.

Peterson, 22, has spent the past three seasons in the Cincinnati Reds organization after being selected in the 12th round of the 2012 draft out of Bakersfield (Calif.) College. Last year, he batted .281 with five doubles, nine RBIs and 14 runs scored in 39 games with the Bakersfield Blaze of the California League (High-A). Peterson saw time at second base, third base, shortstop, left field and center field with Bakersfield last year.

Mason, 25, last played in 2013 in the Colorado Rockies organization with the Asheville (N.C.) Tourists of the Carolina League (High-A). He was 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 21 games. Mason pitched 29.1 innings and allowed 12 runs (11 earned) on 27 hits while striking out 28 batters. He was selected by the Rockies in the 24th round of the 2012 draft out of Marshall University (W.V.).

Salerno, 23, was traded by the RedHawks to New Jersey this winter as part of the deal that brought OF Joe Dunigan to Fargo-Moorhead. He was re-acquired for RHP Alex Powers. In his first taste of professional baseball last season, Salerno batted .327 with five doubles, one home run, ten RBIs and 10 runs scored in 12 games for the RedHawks.

Santos, 27, split time last season with the Indianapolis Indians of the International League (Triple-A) and the Fresno Grizzlies of the Pacific Coast League (Triple-A). In his two stops, he batted .221 with six doubles, nine RBIs, and ten runs scored in 46 games. Santos has batted .303 with 35 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 75 RBIs, 98 runs scored and posted a .393 on-base percentage in 186 games at the Double-A level in his career. He had been in training camp with Somerset this year when his contract rights were traded to the RedHawks.

Reynolds was signed earlier this month by the RedHawks after two seasons in the Atlanta Braves organization. Kaskadden batted .213 with five doubles, three home runs and 20 runs scored in 71 games with Fargo-Moorhead last season.
