RedHawks Sign Castro; Release Alberts

FARGO, N.D. - The reshaping of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks continued today as the club signed 1B Erik Castro and placed OF Tim Alberts on irrevocable waivers for the purpose of granting him his release. Castro will be in uniform tonight as the RedHawks open a three-game home series against the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Newman Outdoor Field.

Castro, 26, began this season with the Oklahoma City RedHawks, the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros in the Pacific Coast League. He appeared in 35 games for Oklahoma City and batted .175 with four doubles, one triple, two home runs, six RBIs and nine runs scored.

In 2013, Castro batted .280 with 28 doubles, 18 home runs, 65 RBIs and 62 runs scored in 117 games for the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Texas League (AA). His best season as a professional game in 2012, when he batted .285 with 27 doubles, one triple, 27 home runs, 108 RBIs and 87 runs scored in 128 games. Castro is a career .268 hitter with 88 doubles, three triples, 63 home runs and 252 RBIs in 417 games.

Castro was drafted by Houston in 2009 in the tenth round out of San Diego State University. At SDSU, he was a teammate of Washington Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg and was coached by Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn.

Alberts was in his second season with the RedHawks. He batted .225 with three doubles, one triple, two home runs, 15 RBIs and 13 runs scored in 47 games in 2014.
