RedHawks Sign Carr and Cox; Release Salazar

FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have signed LHP Kyle Carr and OF Jay Cox and released 1B Ruben Salazar, the Northern League club announced today. Both Carr and Cox will be in Fargo when the RedHawks open training camp on May 6 at Newman Outdoor Field.
Carr, 23, is a native of Linton, N.D., and spent the last two seasons in the Minnesota Twins organization. Last year, Carr was 1-0 with a 1.25 ERA and five saves in 12 games at Elizabethton Twins of the Appalachian League (R) before he was promoted the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League (A). With Beloit, Carr was 0-2 with a 3.42 ERA in 16 games. For the season, he was 1-2 with a 2.38 ERA in two stops. Carr pitched 45.1 innings and allowed 18 runs (12 earned) on 35 hits with 61 strikeouts and 16 walks.
Carr was selected by the Twins out of the University of Minnesota in the 12th round of the 2008 draft. He pitched with the Gulf Coast League Twins and Elizabethton in his first season of professional baseball. Carr earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore in 2007 when he recorded seven saves for the Gophers.
Cox, 25, joins the RedHawks after spending the past four seasons in the Colorado Rockies organization. Last year, he batted .294 with 22 doubles, six triples, 12 home runs, 51 RBIs and 58 runs scored in 111 games for the Modesto Nuts of the California League (A).
In his career, Cox has batted .271 with 95 doubles, 18 triples, 29 home runs, 192 RBIs and 197 runs scored in 374 games. He was fifth in the South Atlantic League in doubles (37) in 2007 while playing for the Asheville (N.C.) Tourists. Cox was selected by the Rockies in the 22nd round of the 2006 draft out of the University of North Carolina. He helped the Tar Heels to a Runner-Up finish at the 2006 College World Series and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Salazar, 32, spent seven seasons with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and was a member of three Northern League Championship clubs. Last season, he batted .299 with eight doubles, 24 RBIs and 21 runs scored in 36 games. He was the 2008 Northern League batting champion after hitting .378 in 61 games.
In his RedHawks career, Salazar batted .312 with 112 doubles, two triples, 45 home runs, 369 RBIs and 319 runs scored in 491 games.
