Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

FARGO, N.D. – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have sold the contract of Northern League All-Star 1B Brian Becker to the Chicgo White Sox organization, the club announced today. Becker will report to the White Sox minor league Spring Training in Tucson, Ariz., next week.

Becker, 27, became one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the Northern League after signing with the RedHawks a week into the 2002 season. He set a new single-season team record with 31 doubles and was selected to represent Fargo-Moorhead in the 2002 Northern League All-Star Game in Quebec in July. Becker batted .325 with 31 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs, 60 RBIs and 60 runs scored in 85 games. He was among the league leaders in five offensive categories: doubles (2nd-31); extra-base hits (3rd-46); hits (5th-116); total bases (5th-188) and batting average (6th-.325). Becker was named to the Northern League Central Post-Season All-Star team following the season.

Prior to signing with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, Becker spent six seasons in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization, including three seasons with the Orlando (Fla.) Rays of the Southern League (AA). His best season came in 1999, when he batted .252 with 24 doubles, one triple, 18 home runs and 74 RBIs. He was signed by the Devil Rays in 1996 as a non-drafted free agent after completing his college career at the University of Arizona.

"Brian has certainly earned this opportunity," said RedHawks manager Doug Simunic. "He came to the Northern League to keep his career going and posted the type of numbers that got him another chance with a Major League organization. We are very happy he is getting this chance.
