Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
The Shreveport Sports have announced the signing of outfielder Jarrett Roenicke to a contract for the 2003 season.
The 23-year old Roenicke is the son of former major leaguer Gary Roenicke and the nephew of Ron Roenicke, the third base coach of the world champion Anaheim Angels.
The left handed hitting outfielder is a native of Grass Valley, California and played college baseball at Yuba (CA) Junior College.
Jarrett was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 17th round of the 2000 draft and played two years in the Padres organization before an injury sidelined him last season.
In 2000, Roenicke hit .269 with the Padres rookie league team in Arizona and in 2001 split time between Eugene (OR) in the Class A Northwest League and Idaho Falls in the Class A Pioneer League.
According to manager Terry Bevington, Roenicke will be given an opportunity to play right field for the Sports.
