FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have re-signed veteran 3B Ruben Salazar to a contract for the 2008 season, the Northern League club announced today.

Salazar, 30, is entering his sixth season with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and 12th season of professional baseball. He batted .317 with 15 doubles, ten home runs, 61 RBIs and 51 runs scored in 79 games. The San Felix, Venezuela native posted a .462 slugging percentage in 2007, his highest in five season with the RedHawks.

Salazar has been one of the most consistent run producers in RedHawks history, and his 292 career RBIs in 394 games his best in club history. He has amassed a .304 (478-for-1,574) batting average in five seasons while helping the Fargo-Moorhead to five playoff appearances and two Northern League Championships (2003 & 2006).

Salazar began his professional career with the Minnesota Twins in 1997 after signing as a non-drafted free agent at the age of 18 in Venezuela. He advanced through the Twins systeam, reaching the Triple-A Edmonton Trappers to start the 2002 season.

"Ruben is a very important player for us," said RedHawks manager Doug Simunic. "He is a professional hitter who will not be overmatched by anyone in the Northern League. He drives in a lot of runs, does a good job for us at third base and is a great veteran to have. We've won a lot of games with Ruben and we're happy to have him back."

REDHAWKS NOTES...

Former Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks players Chris Coste and Jon Weber faced off today in a Grapefruit League game in Florida as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2. Coste, who started at catcher and batted eighth for the Philadelphia Phillies was 0-for-3 in the game. Weber started in centerfield and batted eighth for the Rays and was also 0-for-3. The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks still have several copies of Coste's new book The 33-Year Old Rookie available for sale in the RedHawks Team Store. The book is $20 plus tax, a savings of 20% off the suggested retail price. Several local retailers have sold out of the book already, which was released today.
