Oklahoma City Comets News Release
The Iowa Cubs are the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Last year, Iowa tied Nashville for first in the American North Division. They lost the division title to Nashville by tie-breaker.
VS. IOWA: The RedHawks swept their series with the Cubs June 27-29 at Iowa. The Cubs took three of four from the RedHawks in a series May 25-28 at Principal Park. In the first series of the season May 17-20 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark, the RedHawks and Cubs split a four-game series. The season series is tied 6-6.
TODAY'S GAME: This is game 118 of the season, and the second of a 4-game series between Oklahoma and Iowa. This is 13th of 15 meetings between the RedHawks and Cubs this season.
LAST GAME: The RedHawks dropped the first game of their series with Iowa, losing 8-4 Friday night. The Cubs scored one in the first and two in the fourth as the built a 3-0 lead. The RedHawks got on the board with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth. After the Cubs scored another run in the fifth to go up 4-2, the RedHawks tied the game at four with two runs on three hits in the sixth. But the RedHawks wouldn't score again as the Cubs scored one run in the eighth and grabbed three more in the ninth to make the final score 8-4. Starter Chris Baker didn't figure in the decision, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings. Derek Lee took the loss, allowing a run on two hits in three innings out of the bullpen.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Eric Hurley makes his ninth start of the season for the RedHawks. He lost his start start Sunday at Sacramento, allowing six runs on four hits, including three home runs, in five innings. Hurley hasn't faced the Cubs in his career. J.R. Mathes starts for the Cubs. Mathes is 0-2 with a 16.00 ERA in two starts against the RedHawks this season. Several Hawks have enjoyed success against Mathes this season as Tug Hulett is 5-for-6 with two doubles, an RBI and five runs scored, Freddy Guzman is 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored and Nate Gold is 2-for-6 with an RBI.
LOOKING FOR HOMEFIELD ADVANTAGE: Since June 27th, the RedHawks have had more success on the road than they have at The Brick, going 16-6 on the road and just 6-12 at home. The Hawks have a 2.99 ERA on the road during that stretch compared to a 4.93 ERA at home. RedHawk hitters are hitting .282 on the road with 28 homers and .278 with 16 homers at home since June 27th.
HAWKS IN THE PEN: The RedHawk relievers have a 1.51 ERA with 39 strikeouts over their last 41.2 innings. They did struggle yesterday as Lee allowed one run and Scott Feldman gave up three unearned runs after an error in the ninth inning last night.
GOLD BALL: Gold has put up some big power numbers this month, hitting five homers and knocking in 12 runs in nine August games. He leads the RedHawks with 18 homers and 81 RBIs. The RedHawks fell to 7-2 in the last nine games Gold has homered after losing yesterday
LEAGUE LEADERS: Guzman leads the league with 42 stolen bases...Hulett is fourth with 82 runs scored.
DOT-DOT-DOT: The RedHawks are 10-8 on Saturday this season...the Hawks have at least one extra-base hit in 12 straight games...Travis Metcalf collected his first Triple-A mulit-hit game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI last night... Victor Diaz has 23 RBIs in his last 22 games...Hulett has scored eight runs in eight games in August...Steve Rowe has allowed only one earned run in his last 10.1 innings over his last five appearances... Ezequiel Astacio has allowed only one hit with 10 strikeouts in his last 7.2 innings over his last four appearances.
