Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Oklahoma City, Okla. - The Oklahoma City RedHawks (33-23) overcame an early 5-0 deficit and rallied for seven runs in the seventh inning as they defeated the Iowa Cubs (25-30) 11-8 before 9,314 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark Saturday night.
The comeback marked the largest deficit the RedHawks have overcome to win a game this season and kept their home winning streak alive at 10 games.
Iowa put up three runs and five hits right away in the first inning. The Cubs added a run in each the second and third innings, chasing RedHawks starting pitcher Aneury Rodriguez from the game.
The RedHawks plated four in the third to get within one. Brian Bixler drove home the team's first run with an RBI single, and Scott Moore followed with an RBI double. Two batters later Mike Hessman sent a two-run double down the left field line to make it 5-4.
Josh Vitters led of the fifth inning with a home run, and Iowa added two more in the seventh to extend their lead to 8-4.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, the RedHawks loaded the bases for Brett Wallace. On a 1-1 pitch from Ryan Rowland-Smith, Wallace sent a line drive to left field that just cleared the fence for a game-tying grand slam.
The next three hitters all reached base against Mike MacDougal (0-1) to load the bases again. After a pop out, the go-ahead run scored on a passed ball by catcher Blake Lalli. Two batters later, Brandon Barnes delivered a two-run single to finish the rally.
In the eighth, the Cubs put two runners on with one out for PCL home run leader Anthony Rizzo. However, Mickey Storey got Rizzo to bounce into a double play on the first pitch to avert the threat.
Jose Valdez retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his 12th save.
After Rodriguez allowed five runs and eight hits over two-plus innings, the RedHawks bullpen surrendered three runs and six hits the rest of the way. Juan Abreu (1-2) pitched a scoreless inning to claim his first win.
The RedHawks continue their series against Iowa at 6:05 p.m. Sunday evening. Tickets are available through the RedHawks box office, by calling (405) 218-1000, going by visiting okcredhawks.com.
Live coverage begins at 5:35 p.m. on AM 1340 The Game, 1340thegame.com, or through the free IHeartRadio app on your mobile device.
