Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
FARGO, N.D. - Fargo-Moorhead starter Broc Coffman tossed 6.2 shutout innings and the RedHawks survived a two-run ninth inning rally to hold off the Gary SouthShore RailCats 4-2 Friday on Opening Night at Newman Outdoor Field.
In a pitcher's duel from the outset, the RailCats got an excellent start from Tony Cogan, who struck out eight and allowed only one hit in 5.0 innings. The southpaw earned his second straight Opening Day start and retired the first 10 men he faced before issuing a walk to Carlo Cota with one out in the fourth. On the very next pitch, Nic Jackson hit a majestic two-run home run to give the RedHawks a lead they would not relinquish.
Coffman was just as good for the home team, picking up right where he left off after a 10-win 2008 season. Coffman retired the first 11 men he saw and gave up only singles to Jay Pecci and Jeff Beachum in his outing. The left-hander walked just one and struck out seven, lasting into the seventh inning without ever facing a significant threat.
In the ninth, the RailCats put runners on second and third with one out on a Rob Marconi single and Steve Haake double against Adam Rowe. Marconi came in to score on a Mike Rohde single and the RailCats added another run on Eric McNamee's groundout, but Fargo closer Tyler Chambliss retired Brett Wallace on a fly ball to the warning track with the tying runs on base to end the game.
Fargo added some insurance in the seventh inning when Alan Rick took Jon Mueller deep with two outs, one batter after Jeremiah Piepkorn singled to keep the inning alive.
The RailCats and RedHawks will rematch Saturday at 7:02 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field, with Chris Jones getting the start for the âCats against Fargo's Garry Bakker. That game will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
Notes: With the loss, the RailCats are now 1-7 all-time on Opening Day, and 0-6 when opening on the road ... The RailCats have now lost 11 straight against Fargo-Moorhead dating back to 2008 and have won just one of their last 12 games at Newman Outdoor Field ... Cogan allowed only two baserunners in his outing, both of whom came in to score ... Newcomers Mike Massaro and Beachum made their RailCats debuts Friday on opposite ends of the order, with Massaro leading off.
