RedHawks Force Game Five
September 5, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes will play a fifth-and-deciding game in their opening round playoff series with Fargo-Moorhead after falling 3-2 to the RedHawks tonight before 5,412 at Canwest Park.
Fargo-Moorhead opened the scoring off Ace Walker in the first on three-straight hits. Donzell McDonald singled to lead it off, went to third on a Zach Penprase double and both scored when Jeremiah Piepkorn flared one into centre. Winnipeg responded in the bottom of the inning off Matt Mossey. Josh Asanovich singled with one out and scored on a two-out double by Vince Harrison. Two innings later, the Goldeyes were poised to break it open after loading the bases with none out, but came away empty when Kevin West bounced weakly into a double play and Dee Brown flew out to end the threat.
Held scoreless since the first, the RedHawks made it 3-1 in the fifth. McDonald singled with two out, stole second and scored on a Penprase single. Winnipeg got that back in the sixth off T.J. Stanton when West led off with his second home run of the playoffs. Both teams had their chances but that's the way it would stay.
Jeremy Hauer (1-0) picked up the win in relief, allowing one hit in one-plus innings of relief with a walk and two strikeouts. Walker (0-1) took the loss after allowing all three runs on eight hits in less than six innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Tim Lavigne tossed two innings of no-hit relief to get the save.
One way or the other, this series will conclude on Sunday at 7 p.m. Bear Bay is up for the Goldeyes while lefty Jeff Icenogle replies for the RedHawks. Great seats starting at just $8 are available at all Ticketmaster locations, including the ballpark box office, by calling 780-3333 or visiting ticketmaster.ca.
