Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks defeated the Joliet JackHammers 10-9 Tuesday night in front of 4,430 fans at Newman Outdoor Field.
With two-outs in the first inning, RedHawks CF Nic Jackson bopped a ball over the Coca-Cola sign in right field to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. That lead was short-lived as RF Wally Backman Jr. answered with a second inning two-run home run to put the JackHammers ahead 2-1.
In the top of the third inning, CF Adam Klein singled up-the-middle and rounded the horn on SS Kevin Rios's double down the left-field line. Rios extended his hit streak to 20-games with the two-bagger. Clean-up hitter, LF Brad Correll, doubled off the left-field wall and Rios reached home to make it 4-1 JackHammers.
The RedHawks cut the lead in half on a third inning triple from SS Zach Penprase, which scored RF Mike Coles from first, who reached on a fielder's choice. The RedHawks crept within one on a solo home run from 2B Carlo Cota, his eighth of the season and third in as many games.
RedHawks DH Kyle Johnson cracked a broken-bat single to left-center to leadoff the fifth inning. Coles legged out an infield single and Johnson reached third on a throwing error by JackHammers starter LHP Ryan Gehring. With one out and runners at the corners, Jackson singled through the right-side to tie it at four-all.
With the bases loaded, JackHammers reliever LHP Devin Anderson walked home the go-ahead run and the RedHawks retook the lead 5-4. In the seventh inning, Jackson soloed for the second time in the game. The RedHawks benefited from a wild pitch and C Alan Rick capped the scoring with a three-run big fly to give the RedHawks a 10-5 five-run cushion. The JackHammers rallied for a three-run ninth thanks to a three-run homer from DH Kyle Nichols, but the RedHawks held onto for a 10-9 win.
RedHawks reliever RHP Elvys Quezada (4-1) earns his fourth win of the season and JackHammers starter LHP Ryan Gehring (3-6) suffers his sixth loss of the season. RedHawks reliever T.J. Stanton earns his fourth save of the season.
The RedHawks and JackHammers play the second game of this three-game set at 7:02 p.m. tomorrow at Newman Outdoor Field. RHP Garry Bakker (3-3, 5.55) will get the
ball for the RedHawks and RHP Jason Richardson (2-7, 5.30) will get the nod for the JackHammers.
