FARGO, ND-After losing a 4-1 lead in the 5th inning, the Joliet JackHammers (23-26) fought back with a three-run home run from DH Kyle Nichols (1-4) in the 9th inning only to lose 10-9 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (29-26) before 4,430 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Tuesday night.
The RedHawks opened the scoring with a single run in the 1st inning against Joliet LHP Ryan Gehring (2-6). CF Nic Jackson (3-6) pulled a two-out solo home run over the right field wall for his 11th home run of the season and a 1-0 RedHawks lead.
The JackHammers utilized the long-ball in the 2nd inning against Fargo-Moorhead RHP Yosandy Ibanez. LF Brad Correll (1-4) worked a leadoff walk. Nichols and 1B Freddie Thon (2-5) each popped out. RF Wally Backman, Jr. (1-3) followed with a two-run home run over the center field wall for a 2-1 JackHammers advantage.
Joliet pushed across two runs in the 3rd inning to take a 4-1 lead. CF Adam Klein (1-4) hit a one-out single and scored on a double by SS Kevin Rios (3-5). Correll followed with a double to plate Rios.
Fargo-Moorhead started chipping away at the three-run Joliet lead by adding a run in the third inning. DH Kyle Johnson (2-4) started the inning with a single and was retired as part of a fielder's choice hit into by RF Mike Coles (3-5). SS Zach Penprase (1-4) laced a triple to score Coles and bring the RedHawks within two runs at 4-2.
The home club inched a little bit closer with a single run in the 4th inning. 2B Carlo Cota (2-3) smacked a solo home run over the left field wall to make it a 4-3 lead for Joliet.
Three runs in the 5th inning gave Fargo-Moorhead a 6-4 lead. Johnson started off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a bunt single by Coles. Both runners advanced one base on a throwing error by Gehring. A walk to Penprase loaded the bases for Jackson, who singled home Johnson for a 4-4 tied score.
Joliet manager Wally Backman yanked Gehring in favor of RHP Chad Blackwell. 3B Jeremiah Piepkorn (1-4) lined a ground ball off of Blackwell's leg. The right-hander was taken out of the game in favor of LHP Devin Anderson.
A bases-loaded walk scored Penprase from third base for a 5-4 Fargo-Moorhead lead. Cota later added an RBI single to give the RedHawks a 6-4 lead.
In the 6th inning, the JackHammers came within one run at 6-5. Nichols worked a walk and moved to second base on a walk issued to Backman, Jr. 3B Andrew Pinckney (1-4) smacked a single to center field to score Nichols.
The RedHawks scored four runs in the 7th inning to take a 10-6 lead. Jackson led off the inning with his second home run of the game. C Alan Rick (1-4) later added a three-run home run to give the RedHawks the four-run lead.
The JackHammers comeback netted three runs in the 9th inning. C Phil Avlas (3-5) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a groundout by Klein. Rios singled Avlas to third base. After Correll flew out to right field, Nichols smacked a three-run home run over the left field wall to bring Joliet within one run at 10-9.
1B Freddie Thon (2-5) grounded out to Fargo-Moorhead first baseman Randall Simon to end the game.
