Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL-Felix Jose went 4-4 and hit his sixth home run of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Flyers fell to the RailCats 5-4.

Christian Guererro began the scoring at Alexian Field, belting a solo home run to left-center off Flyers' starter Ed Almonte.

The Flyers tied the game in the bottom half of the second on an RBI fielder's choice by Richard Mercado that scored Jose Valdez.

Eric McNamee then roped an RBI double to right center in the top of the third, scoring Chris Carrara, to give Gary the lead back at 2-1.

44-year old DH Felix Jose tied the game in the bottom of the third belting his sixth home run of the season, an opposite-field shot to left center.

The back-and-forth continued when Gary took the lead back in the top of the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Jay Pecci plated Carrara and a Jose Valdez error on a ball hit by Steve Haake brought home Eric McNamee.

The Flyers had a rally in the bottom of the fifth. Guererro threw out Travis Brown at home on a Felix Jose base hit. The Flyers did not leave the inning scoreless, however, as Vince Harrison scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 4-3 through five.

The RailCats added another run in the top of the sixth after a Rob Marconi scored on a wild pitch from Kris Jiggitts after his triple. Almonte gave up the triple and pitched 5.1 innings giving up five runs and nine hits and striking out six. Garret Holleran went five for Gary, giving up three runs and nine hits, striking out two.

The Flyers put another run across in the bottom of the seventh as Valdez plated Harrison on a close play at the plate. They rallied again in the bottom of the eighth but a diving stop by Pecci kept Brown from scoring.

In the top of the ninth the rain came pouring down on Alexian Field. After an hour rain delay, the teams took the field to conclude the game. Schaumburg's newest pitcher Josh Giles got out of a jam in the top of the ninth. After a Valdez two-out single, Jeff Dunbar grounded out to end the game.

The Flyers fall to 27-30 while the Railcats improve to 34-25. Almonte takes the loss (5-6) while Holleran collects the victory for Gary (1-1).

The Flyers and RailCats conclude their series with a doubleheader tomorrow. Game 1 is at 12:05 as RHP Tom Lyons (2-3, 5.19) takes on Derell McCall (0-0, 0.00) of the RailCats. Game 2 is at 6:45 and the Flyers have yet to announce a starter while Gary will send LHP Tony Cogan (5-5, 3.83) to the mound. Both games can be heard on flyersbaseball.com.
