Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and Winnipeg Goldeyes split a doubleheader on Saturday night before 4,306 fans at Newman Outdoor Field. Winnipeg (31-22) won the opener 6-2, and Fargo-Moorhead took game two 5-4.
Winnipeg starter RHP Andrew Cruse threw six innings of shutout ball as the Fish won the first game. Cruse (4-3) earns his fourth win of the season and RedHawks starter RHP Nick Fellman (2-5) suffers his fifth loss of the season.
Goldeyes CF Cory Patton worked a walk and reached third on a throwing error by RedHawks 1B Randall Simon and 2B Josh Asanovich's sac bunt. With nobody out and runners at the corners, Goldeyes DH Juan Diaz plated Patton with a single up-the-middle to give the Goldeyes a 1-0 first inning lead.
In the third inning, Asanovich hit a blooper to the left-field line and reached second on Diaz's groundout to third. Goldeyes RF Kevin West extended his league-leading hit streak to 21-games with his 16th double of the season. LF Dee Brown doubled to the left-center gap to cap the Goldeyes two-run third.
Goldeyes C Dustin Richardson hit a three-run bomb to give the Fish a six-run sixth-inning cushion. LF Justin Justice doubled to right-field to leadoff the RedHawks last at-bats. With Justice at second, DH Kyle Johnson spoiled Cruse's shutout bid with an RBI double off the right-field wall. RF Mike Coles hit an RBI single and the RedHawks crept within four, but the rally fell short.
In the second game, 2B Carlo Cota hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the RedHawks to a victory. Reliever Yosandy Ibanez picked up the victory, while Goldeyes starter Zach Baldwin took the loss. LHP Scott Koerber pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn his third save of the season.
In the second inning of the nightcap, Cota clubbed a one-out double and C Alan Rick hit a home run, his second in as many nights, to give the RedHawks a 2-0 lead. RedHawks RF Mike Coles stole home on a double steal and CF Nic Jackson plated SS Zach Penprase with a left-center flare to make it 4-0 RedHawks.
The Goldeyes got on the board in the third inning on a solo shot by CF Cory Patton, his eighth of the season. In the top of the sixth inning, Goldeyes DH Juan Diaz homered for the second time in as many nights to tie the game at four all. The RedHawks responded with a tie-breaking solo shot from Cota to give the RedHawks the 5-4 game-lasting lead.
The RedHawks wrap up the series with a 1:00 p.m. start tomorrow against the Goldeyes at Newman Outdoor Field. Fans can purchase tickets for all future RedHawks home games by calling 701-235-6161, online at www.fmredhawks.com or by stopping by the Newman Outdoor Field ticket office.
