Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have signed RHP Aaron Shafer to a contract. Shafer is the 21st player signed by RedHawks Manager Doug Simunic for this season.
Shafer, 25, pitched at three stops last season. He began the year with the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League before his contract was purchased by the Atlanta Braves organization. With Gateway, Shafer was 2-0 with a 0.61 ERA in two starts. The Braves assigned him to the Carolina League (High-A), where he was 3-3 with a 3.05 ERA in 11 games (ten starts) for the Lynchburg Hilltoppers before being promoted to the Mississippi Braves of the Southern League (AA). With Mississippi, Shafer was 3-2 with a 4.67 ERA in seven starts.
Shafer began his professional career in 2008 after the Chicago Cubs selected him in the second round (65th overall) of the 2008 draft out of Wichita State University. He spent three seasons in the Cubs organization and reached the Double-A level with Tennessee in 2010. In his four-year professional career, Shafer is 25-18 with a 3.54 ERA and seven saves in 103 games (50 starts). He has struck out 277 batters and walked 99 in 353.2 innings pitched.
"We think Aaron is going to be a big part of our rotation this year," said Simunic. "He's a guy we can hand the ball to every fifth day and feel like we have a good shot to win the game."
