Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Redfish returned to Charlotte Sports Park after a twelve game road trip, including three games at the Charlotte Sports Park where the Redfish played as the visiting team. The Redfish certainly kept the 1,875 fans in attendance entertained as they gained their first home win of the year, downing the Anderson Joes, 6-4.

Earl Smith made his fourth start of the season for the Redfish facing off against Anderson Joe's starter Domingo Gomez. Smith allowed a lead-off single to Brandon Carter but gathered himself striking out the next two batters and getting Richard Quihuis-Bell to fly out to end the top of the first.

The Redfish came to the plate in the bottom of the inning and delivered. Cedric Gibson, making his first start in a Redfish uniform and fully recovered from being hit in a pinch-hit effort against the Bradenton Juice, laced a single up the middle, stole second and moved to third on a Ramon Downing double. PJ Lehmann, starting at shortstop for the second straight game, grounded out but got an RBI as Gibson came in to score. Jose Garcia, the Redfish right-fielder, stepped to the plate and crushed a 2-run homerun off the SWFL Parrot in leftfield and the Redfish took a 3-0 lead.

Smith would set the Joes down in order in the second and third innings. The Joes, though, would reach Smith in the fourth. Billy Hogan walked, advanced to second on Quihuis fielder's choice and came around to score on a Ryan Pressley RBI single. Normando Linero, the Joes' catcher, also knocked an RBI single and the Joes trailed 3-2. The Joes added another run in the fifth and the game was all square at 3. Smith had a stellar night as he threw 6 strong innings allowing only three runs, two earned, on three hits. He struck out four and walked four in his best showing of the year.

After the Joes added a run in the top of the 7th, the Redfish were looking up for the first time on the night, but it wouldn't be for long. Jeremy McCann, Redfish first baseman, led off the inning against a new Joes' pitcher, Jason Williams (0-3), with a double. Sam Martinez reached on his second straight bunt single and, with no outs, Jose Gutierrez hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly and the game was tied once again. McCann would prove to be the hero for the Redfish on this night.

In the top of the eighth, PJ Lehmann walked and was followed by a William Plaza double that ricocheted off the glove of Joes' third baseman Kevin Noles who was playing in to try and protect against the bunt. Anthony Sandstrom the switch hitting second baseman was intentionally walked, which would prove costly for the Joes. McCann lined a two-RBI single down the left-field line and the Redfish reeled in a victory much to the delight of the hometown faithful.

The Redfish will take on the Anderson Joes in the second game of the three game series tomorrow night, June 8th. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
