Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Rochester Red Wings announced today that former Red Wings Chris Hoiles, Paul Mitchell, and former Red Wings team President Elmer Fairchild Sr. will be inducted into the Red Wings Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 28.
The Red Wings Hall of Fame was established in 1989 to recognize individuals who made unique contributions to the history of professional baseball in Rochester, both on and off the field. After the August 28th ceremony, the Red Wings Hall of Fame will include 80 members.
Catcher Chris Hoiles played two seasons (1989 & 1990) with the Red Wings. One of the best catchers to play for Rochester during the Orioles era, Hoiles helped lead the Red Wings to the Governors' Cup championship in 1990 batting.348 with 18 home runs and 56 RBI. Hoiles would go on to have a very successful 10-year Major League career (all with Baltimore) hitting.262 with 151 home runs a 449 RBI.
Right-handed Paul Mitchell played parts of three seasons (1973, 1974 & 1975) with the Red Wings, going 32-14 with a 3.16 ERA. Mitchell's best year with Rochester came in 1975 when he went 10-1 with a 2.06 ERA for Red Wings Hall of Famer Joe Altobelli's 1975 Governors' Cup championship team. Mitchell, who went 54-23 in his first five professional seasons, ranks 2nd on the Red Wings all-time winning percentage list for pitchers (32-14 record.696) only behind fellow Red Wings Hall of Famer Fred Beene (46-20 record.697). In 1976 Mitchell was in a block buster trade that sent him to Oakland with Mike Torrez and Don Baylor in exchange for Bill VanBommell, Ken Holtzman and Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson.
Elmer Fairchild Sr. was the President of the Rochester Red Wings from 1944 to 1954. Fairchild, a semi-pro outfielder, spent most of his life trying to pay back what he called his debt to the city which as he said "has been so good to me.-Â In his 10 years as President of the Red Wings Fairchild's "salary"Â was a "free"Â box seat.
Hoiles, Mitchell and family members of Elmer Fairchild will be on-hand to accept their Hall of Fame honors.
