Chicago Stars FC News Release
CHICAGO, Ill. - The Chicago Red Stars announced today the signing of defender Casey Short for the 2016 NWSL season. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 25-year-old from Naperville, Illinois, most recently played in Norway with the Avaldsnes football club. Short has had a successful stint in Norway, recently being honored as one of the Top 11 in the Norwegian Toppserien league at the 2015 NISO Awards.
"I have waited three years to be able to have Casey in the squad," said head coach Rory Dames. "She just finished a great year in Norway and now she can finally return home and become a Red Star. She will slide straight into one of our outside back spots and give us the attributes we look for in those spaces."
Short was selected by the Boston Breakers as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2013 NWSL College Draft, but missed out on her rookie season due to knee injury. After the 2013 season, the Chicago Red Stars acquired Short via trade with the Breakers. Short suffered a second knee injury (ACL) before the start of the 2014 season.
As a member of the Florida State Women's Soccer program, Short played in 81 games (70 starts) in her four-year career. She was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team in 2008, All-ACC Second Team in 2010 and 2012, and the NSCAA Southeast All-Region First Team in 2012.
