Chicago Stars FC News Release
Chicago, IL (July 9, 2014) - The Red Stars return home to face Portland Thorns FC tonight at 7:00 p.m. CT at the Village of Lisle - Benedictine University Sports Complex in what will be the first of a three-match homestand. The match-up will be the second game in six days between the two teams.
In the previous match in Portland on July 4th, the Red Stars (6-6-3, 21pts) managed to steal a point on the road against the Portland Thorns FC (6-3-3, 21pts) as both teams are sitting on the same record and looking to break upwards in the league standings. Battling back from a 0-2 deficit, the Red Stars showed resilience late in the game and forced the draw on the back of two Christen Press goals. Opening the scoring, Thorns forward Jessica McDonald set a new single-season club record with her ninth goal of the season in the 24th minute. She is currently tied for second with FC Kansas City forward Amy Rodriguez in the NWSL standings in goal scoring. Following suit, defender Sarah Huffman scored her first career goal for the Thorns in the 39th minute.
However, the Thorns would be unable to maintain the lead as Red Stars forward Press netted her first two career NWSL goals in the final 15 minutes of the match. Press cut the lead in half in the 76th minute when she received a long ball from midfielder Emily Van Egmond. She then evened the score in the 82nd minute with a shot to the top right corner.
The Thorns feature a star-studded lineup including German international goalkeeper Nadine Angerer, Spanish international Vero Boquete, Canadian forward Christine Sinclair, as well as U.S. Women's National Team players Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath.
The Red Stars have a tough home schedule over the next week and a half with visiting league-leaders Seattle Reign FC coming to town on Saturday, July 12. Portland will be back again next Thursday, July 17.
Red Stars vs. Portland Thorns FC kicks off Wednesday 7 p.m. at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex.
