Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Salem overwhelmed Lynchburg 13-4 on Tuesday night at City Stadium in the opener of two-game series. The Red Sox pounded out 16 hits against Lynchburg pitching, highlighted by nine extra-base hits. The Cats and Red Sox will meet in the series finale Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.

The Red Sox immediately took control of the game in the top of the first. Che-Hsuan Lin drew a leadoff walk from Lynchburg starter Jeff Locke and advanced to third on a double by Jason Place. Mike Jones grounded to Locke, who made an errant throw to third baseman Jose De Los Santos, which allowed Lin to score. Yamaico Navarro followed with an RBI groundout that scored Place. Anthony Rizzo delivered an RBI groundout that plated Jones and gave Salem a 3-0 edge.

Lynchburg's offense came alive in the bottom of the third. Kent Sakamoto singled to start the frame, but was forced out at second base when Chase d'Arnaud hit a grounder to third. After De Los Santos singled, Jordy Mercer smacked a two-run triple into the left-field corner. Mercer scored on a sacrifice fly from Matt Hague, which evened the score at 3-3.

The score would not stay tied for long as Salem broke the game open with a five-run inning in the fourth. Locke gave up consecutive singles to Tim Federowicz and David Mailman, setting the table for Will Vazquez, who ripped an RBI double that plated Federowicz. Kris Negron followed with an RBI single and Lin drove in Vazquez and Negron with a two-run triple, which ended the night for Locke.

Lynchburg reliever Chris Cullen replaced Locke and retired Place before allowing an RBI double to Jones, which put Salem ahead by an 8-3 score.

Salem tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Federowicz belted a solo home run to begin the inning. Cullen retired the next two Salem batters before surrendering three consecutive hits - two doubles and a single - which resulted in three runs and gave the Red Sox a commanding 11-3 advantage.

Lynchburg scored a run off Salem reliever Jason Rice in the bottom of the sixth. After allowing a single to Alex Presley and a walk to Jared Keel, Rice gave up an RBI single to Sakamoto, which reduced the deficit to 11-4.

Salem added two more runs in the eighth on Navarro's two-run home run off Harvey Garcia.

Eammon Portice (6-3) allowed eight hits and three earned runs in five innings to pick up the win for Salem. Locke (2-6) was charged with the loss for Lynchburg.

The Hillcats will try to salvage a split of the two-game series when the two teams meet on Wednesday night at Calvin Falwell Field. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
