Kinston Indians News Release
Myrtle Beach came out of the gates with four runs on five hits in the top of the first inning and held a 6-0 lead through 4 ½ innings, but Kinston came storming back with four in the bottom of the fifth and cut the lead down to one in the eighth. The K-Tribe couldn't muster another run home however, even though they out-hit the Pelicans 11 to seven and 11 to two after the top of the first. The Indians left 11 men on base for the game, and have still not won back-to-back home games since May 8th and 9th vs. these Pelicans. For The Longest Time
Last night's game lasted three hours and 30 minutes, the longest nine-inning game of the season for Kinston. This comes on the heels of Saturday's 14-inning, four hour and 18 minute marathon that was the longest extra inning game for the K-Tribe this season. The first five games of the second half have now averaged three hours and 24 minutes a contest. Now in 10 games with Myrtle Beach this season, just two games have finished in less than three hours, and the average time per contest between the clubs has been three hours and seven minutes long.
Slow Starters
Kinston has now let up at least one run in the first inning of every game so far to start the second half, getting outscored 9-0 in the first frame these first five games. For the entire season, the K-Tribe has been outscored 64-41 in the first inning, the largest scoring margin against the club in any inning. Filling In Nicely
Richard Martinez has now caught four straight games behind the plate for the Indians, filling in for Alex Castillo while he deals with an injured catching thumb. Big Rich has responded well to the role, getting a hit in each game to extend his season long hit streak to five games. Martinez also stunned everyone at the stadium when he stole his first base of the season and just his fourth of his four-year career. Behind the plate, Martinez has shown a great arm as well, throwing out 15 of 31 (48%) would-be base stealers on the season, good for the second-highest caught stealing percentage in the league with a minimum of 30 attempts. Beach Boys
The K-Tribe is now 7-3 against the Pelicans, the only team in the Carolina League Kinston has a winning record against. Kinston has won the first game in each of the four series with Myrtle Beach this season. The Indians are hitting .297 vs. Myrtle Beach with a 3.50 team ERA vs. the Pelicans; conversely, Myrtle is hitting just .231 with a 6.85 ERA vs. the K-Tribe. Dropping E
After spending the first month and a half of the season just ahead of Frederick for the worst fielding percentage in the Carolina League, Kinston now has a .973 team fielding percentage, tied for third best in the CL. Guiding the way with the glove is Cord Phelps, having committed only two errors all season and leading all second baseman with a .993 fielding percentage. Lonnie Chisenhall's defensive has improved tremendously at the hot corner as well. After Chisenhall committed a team high 16 errors in the first two months of play, including 12 in May, he has committed just three errors so far in June, including a current 17-game errorless streak. The Indians have been solid throwing out base runners from behind the plate as well. The combined efforts of Alex Castillo and Richard Martinez have thrown out 38% of would-be base stealers, the third highest percentage in the Carolina League.
