Red Sox Drop Dash in Extras, Grab 2-0 Series Lead

September 10, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - John Hee lined a two-out, two-run single in the top of the 11th inning to lift Salem over Winston-Salem 6-4 in game two of the Southern Division Championship Series on Thursday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Red Sox own a commanding 2-0 advantage in the best-of-five series that will shift to Salem over the weekend for game three and if necessary, game four.

The game-winning rally began against newly inserted reliever Tyson Corley when Zach Borowiak led off with a double. Two outs later, Che-Hsuan Lin walked and stole second. Hee lined an opposite field single that scored both runners and gave Salem a 6-4 lead. Corley (0-1) suffered the loss, while Kyle Fernandes tossed 1.1 innings of perfect relief to earn the win.

The Dash plated the first run of the contest off Kyle Weiland in the bottom of the second inning. Justin Greene led off with a single and Tyler Kuhn reached when his sacrifice bunt was bobbled by Weiland for an error. After a failed bunt attempt by Adam Ricks, Joe Persichina walked to load the bases. Dale Mollenhauer dropped a one-out RBI single into left field to put Winston-Salem in front 1-0. Weiland escaped further damage when he induced an inning-ending double-play grounder from Greg Paiml.

Salem turned to their veteran leader to take the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Anthony Rizzo began the frame with a single and Brad Correll launched a two-run shot over the left field wall. It was the second two-run home run in as many nights for Correll, a 28-year-old who was signed as a free agent by the Red Sox in August. He is with his fourth Carolina League team and played with Potomac in 2003.

The Red Sox turned to the long ball again to add a run in the top of the fifth inning when Che-Hsuan Lin hit a solo shot off Anthony Carter to give Salem a 3-0 lead. It was the league-leading 23rd home run allowed by Carter, who has surrendered 16 of them at Wake Forest baseball Park. The right-hander worked five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits, but did not figure in the decision.

Winston-Salem evened the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mollenhauer and Paiml connected on back-to-back one out singles and advanced to second and third on a ground out. All-Star third baseman Brent Morel followed with a clutch two-out single that knotted the score at three.

Chih-Hsien Chiang hit the third home run of the night for Salem, a solo blast off Wander Perez in the top of the eighth inning to give the Red Sox a 4-3 lead. The Dash answered in the bottom of the inning when Seth Loman singled with one out and was replaced by pinch-runner Kent Gerst. Justin Greene smacked a deep drive off the base off the left field wall, but a perfect relay throw by shortstop Ryan Dent gunned down Gerst at the plate. Greene ended up a second with a double and came all the way around to score on a two-out infield single by Tyler Kuhn that tied the game at four.

Weiland was solid in his seven innings of work even though he did not collect a decision. He limited the Dash to three runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts.

The Southern Division Championship Series shifts to Lewis-Gale Field for game three on Friday night. Winston-Salem will send RHP Jacob Rasner (4-7, 4.72) to the mound, while Salem will counter with RHP Seth Garrison (8-11, 3.90). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
