(Portland --) On Friday, October 19, more than 40 volunteers from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, the Maine Red Claws, the Red Claws Young Leaders program and Maine Medical Center will spend the day improving indoor and outdoor learning areas, painting murals and building picnic tables at Presumpscot Elementary School during the Harvard Pilgrim Foundation's annual company-wide day of service. The day will kick off at 9:00 am with an introduction of the volunteers to the students and staff of Presumpscot by VP of Harvard Pilgrim in Maine, Ed Kane. While the corporate volunteers are hard at work, the Red Claws will host a healthy living program for the students featuring a video of Red Claws players and fun physical activity.

Each year, the Harvard Pilgrim Foundation and Harvard Pilgrim's Maine employees volunteer more than 100 hours and give over $250,000 in grants to benefit local organizations. "Our employees look forward to this service day for months," said Ed Kane, VP of Harvard Pilgrim in Maine. "Our company has a strong tradition of hands-on community involvement and we all appreciate the opportunity to improve the active and learning spaces for Maine's students - giving them the environment they need to succeed."

Harvard Pilgrim is a nonprofit company; in addition to Portland, there are offices in Wellesley, Quincy, and Worcester, MA and Manchester, NH.

Presumpscot Principal Cynthia Loring said, "It benefits both schools and local businesses to work together. Our students learn the importance of community service by seeing these people working hard on their behalf, and the businesses learn how their contributions can truly benefit school facilities operating on tight budgets."

"The Maine Red Claws are proud residents of the city of Portland and the kids in Portland have always been enthusiastic supporters of the team," said Red Claws Executive Vice President Dajuan Eubanks. "We were so happy when Harvard Pilgrim asked the Red Claws to join them in their effort to give back to the community and to help improve the learning experience for the students at Presumpscot School. We are looking forward to a day full of getting our hands dirty!"

Presumpscot is the first Maine school to benefit from Harvard Pilgrim's community volunteer tradition; in the past, the company has worked on the grounds of Camp Sunshine in Casco, an organization which it continues to support through grants. The Harvard Pilgrim Foundation hosts similar service days in Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts as well as Manchester, NH.
