New York Red Bulls News Release
FOXBOROUGH, MA - The New York Red Bulls fell to the New England Revolution, 2-1, on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium. Revolution goals from Charlie Davies and Teal Bunbury made the difference, while Sacha Kljestan scored for New York.
The Red Bulls are now 3-1-4 on the season. The loss is the first setback for New York, ending a seven-game unbeaten run to start the season. The Red Bulls are the last team in MLS to lose a game in 2015.
Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch sent out a new-look starting XI at Gillette Stadium. New York had the need for fresh legs entering its third match in seven days. Four players made their first starts of the season - Connor Lade and Karl Ouimette on the back line, Dane Richards and Sean Davis in the midfield - while some of the early season fire power in Bradley Wright-Phillips and Lloyd Sam started on the bench.
The Revolution opened the scoring in the ninth minute, when a long cross from London Woodbury found the head of Charlie Davies at the edge of the six yard box. Davies redirected the ball under the crossbar, leaving Red Bulls' 'keeper Luis Robles no time to react.
The second goal came in the 60th minute, when a New England counter down the left side saw second-half sub Lee Nguyen receive a pass at the top of the box. Nguyen was able to touch the ball into space for Teal Bunbury, who finished his one-on-one opportunity against Robles.
Sacha Kljetsan pulled one back for New York in the 73rd minute. Kljestan was able to run onto a ball from forward Mike Grella, taking his first touch into the box, where he easily stepped around Revs' 'keeper Bobby Shuttleworth and deposited the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
With Kljestan's marker, New York has scored in all eight games played this season.
The goal, along with substitute appearances from Bradley Wright-Phillips and Lloyd Sam, revitalized the Red Bulls and put New England on the back foot, leading to heavy possession and the better of the chances for New York over the final 20 minutes.
Wright-Phillips entered the game just after the one-hour mark. The Englishman's best look came in the 79th minute when he got his head on a short cross from Grella, but his effort went over the bar.
Felipe had a chance from the top of the box in the 87th minute, finding himself in space and launching a shot that required a diving save from Shuttleworth.
New York remains in third place in the Eastern Conference with the loss, four points behind both New England and D.C. United, and two clear of fourth-place Columbus.
The Red Bulls are back in action on Sunday, May 10, when they return to Red Bull Arena to host newly-formed neighbors New York City FC. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET (TV: Fox Sports 1).
