Record Setting Three Goals Pace Eagles To Win Over Moncton

February 14, 2024 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

A back-and-forth first period saw both teams take, and subsequently lose, the lead. Moncton opened the scoring on a power play blast from Caleb Desnoyers, and the Eagles countered with a nifty individual effort by Houde to race around the Moncton defense and beat Warren. Lavallée came up with a similar effort on the left wing to put the Eagles in front, before a late point shot from Ales Zielinski tied the contest with 70 seconds to go in the opening frame.

Until the late stages of the second, it looked as though Moncton would carry a lead into the third period. Desnoyers was able to find Alex Mercier in front of the net and he tipped the puck by Milota. It remained a Moncton lead with four minutes to play in the period.

Romeo began the comeback with a heavy shot from the front of the net to tie the game at the 16:41 mark. At 17:06, Schmitt finished a pass from behind the net through the legs of Warren to give the Eagles the lead. Patterson's goal found its way up and over Warren at 17:13, giving the Eagles a new record and the first two goal lead of the game for either side.

Steinman came into the game at the beginning of the third period in relief of Warren. Moncton outshot Cape Breton 11-2 in the third frame but couldn't generate much in terms of major chances. In the final three minutes, coach Daniel Lacroix elected to lift Steinman for an extra attacker, but the Cats couldn't solve Milota. With the win the Eagles broke a three game losing streak, and extended Moncton's losing streak to four games.

The Eagles are next in action on Friday night- It's the Battle of Nova Scotia as the Eagles battle the Mooseheads, featuring Team Canada World Junior players Jake Furlong & Mathis Rousseau, along with other NHL drafted players Mathieu Cataford & Dylan MacKinnon.
