Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

BRIDGEWATER, New Jersey - The Skeeters knocked around a single-game high 19 hits to back up Kelvin Villa's 11-strikeout performance to win the regular-season finale 11-9 against the Patriots Thursday night at TD Bank Ballpark. The Skeeters record finishes at (6-14) versus the Patriots this season.

Sugar Land broke the bank first with a big first inning off starter Derell McCall in the series finale Thursday night. After Dominic Ramos struck out to start the inning, Dionys Cesar reached on a single into right. Bubba Bell followed with a single back up the middle on a hit-and-run allowing Cesar to scamper to third. Josh Pressley grounded into a fielder's choice in the next at-bat which took Cesar off third on a 3-2 putout.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Steve Moss used a RBI single into right center to give the Skeeters a 1-0 lead. Ofilio Castro walked on a full-count to load the bases one batter later, and with them juiced and two outs in the inning, Aaron Bates capitalized on a fastball over the middle of the plate. The first baseman lined it up the middle into center forcing Patriots outfielder Joe Holden to dive. He missed the ball allowing all three runners to score, 4-0.

The Skeeters managed one more run in the top of the third before McCall was yanked after two and a third innings. Bell and Pressley led the inning off with back-to-back singles. Two batters after Pressley, Castro brought in his 50th run of the season with a RBI single up the middle, 5-0. Carlton Smith replaced McCall who gave up five runs on seven hits in his shortest outing of the season.

Somerset countered with one run in the bottom of the third off starter Kelvin Villa. Jonny Tucker singled over the third baseman to reach with one out and was quickly moved to second on a hit-by-pitch to Colin Curtin. One batter later, Yunesky Sanchez knocked a RBI single up the middle to bring Tucker in from second, 5-1.

Sugar Land got the run back with two runs in the top of the fourth off reliever Smith with three hits. Manny Mejia led the inning off with a triple into right before Bell tallied his third hit of the game, a RBI single up the middle to push the lead back to five, 6-1. After a Pressley walk, Moss scored Bell for the second time in the game with another RBI single up the middle, 7-1.

After a scoreless fifth and sixth, the Skeeters expanded their lead to double-digits off reliever Jon Kibler with a four-run seventh. Matt Hagen, Mejia and Dominic Ramos started off the inning with singles before Cesar plated the first run with a sac-fly into left with the bases loaded, 8-1. Two batters later with two outs in the inning, Pressley picked up two RBI with his first triple of the season into deep center, 10-1. Moss drove Pressley in one batter later with his third RBI single of the game, 11-1.

Villa started the bottom of the seventh but was taken from the game after giving up a leadoff single to Dan DeGeorge. Villa became the first pitcher in franchise history to strikeout double-digit batters in a start after leaving with 11 in six innings of work with zero walks. He gave up just two runs off seven hits. Garrett Parcell replaced the lefty, but struggled to get himself out of the inning working only a third before he was yanked for Saul Rivera to finish the inning. Joe Holden brought one run around on a RBI double and Colin Curtis hit a two-run homer (1) to cut the lead down to six, 11-5.

Rivera continued to work into the bottom of the eighth after the Skeeters were held scoreless in the top-half of the inning. After getting the first batter on a pop-up, catcher Yusuf Carter smacked a solo home run (12) off Rivera to cut the lead to 11-6.

Roberto Giron was a sure bet for Manager Gary Gaetti to close the game out in the ninth, but the Undertaker gave up his first earned runs to a team other than the Bluefish this season with three allowed in the bottom of the ninth. Curtis reached on a leadoff double and Sanchez walked before Corey Smith knocked both of them in with the Patriots third homer (8) of the game, 11-9. Giron Was pulled after striking out two before Jeff Farnsworth was brought in for the final out.
