North Carolina FC News Release
CARY, NC - A regular season record crowd of 7,856 watched the Carolina RailHawks (4W-2T-2L, 14pts) defeat the Tampa Bay Rowdies (2W-3T-3L, 9pts) 2-0 on Saturday night. Goals from Mike Grella and Tiyi Shipalane propelled the RailHawks to extend their unbeaten streak at WakeMed Soccer Park to 21 matches.
"There were a lot of reasons to be pleased tonight. The result, the crowd, and the shutout," said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke. "Our passing was very good tonight and defensively we played very well. Things are coming together."
The RailHawks defense has been hitting its stride with four consecutive shutouts and they have not allowed an opponent to score in 373 minutes. In the 18th minute, the RailHawks jumped to an early lead when Grella received a ball over the top from Jun Marques Davidson. Grella chested the ball down to his feet and poked the ball past the Tampa Bay goalkeeper for the 1-0 halftime lead.
Midfielder Cesar Elizondo terrorized the Rowdies difference and sealed the RailHawks victory in the 71st minute with a perfectly placed ball that found Shipalane running toward goal. Shipalane gathered the ball in the box and calmly placed the ball into the back of the net.
The RailHawks finished the NASL Spring Season with a roadtrip to Edmonton before returning to WakeMed Soccer Park to host Chivas USA in the 4th Round of the U.S. Open Cup on Saturday, June 14th at 8:00pm. Tickets for the Chivas USA match are on-sale now and can be purchase as part of the Puebla/ Chivas USA Two Pack that includes tickets up to 30% off for the June 14th Chivas USA match and the July 6th Puebla FC.
