San Antonio Scorpions News Release
Indianapolis, IN - The San Antonio Scorpions stretched their franchise record road winning streak to four games with their second straight dramatic NASL victory. Walter Restrepo scored seconds before the final whistle to give San Antonio the win and keep their Spring Season Championship hopes alive.
Late in stoppage time of the second half, it looked as if San Antonio's Spring Season title hopes were all but finished with league-leading Minnesota winning in Atlanta and the Scorpions having to win to keep pace in the standings. But in a déjàvu moment for Scorpions fans from last week's injury time win in Ottawa, the red and black claimed another dramatic three points when Walter Restrepo's shot in the 94' minute found the twine. Rookie Billy Forbes hit a hard liner that Eleven keeper Kristian Nicht parried, but right into the path of Restrepo who did not miss the open net.
After a fairly lackluster first half that saw few chances or offensive creativity from either side, the second half opened up in a big way as the teams raced up and down the pitch. In the 52', Billy Forbes opened his professional account with a little help from his friends. Restrepo, who was probably the most influential offensive player on the night for the Scorpions, carried the ball deep up the left side of the field for the Scorpions. He squared the ball to Danny Barrera who deftly backheeled the ball onto a platter for the on-rushing Forbes. The Turks and Caicos international struck the ball first time and it sailed straight into the back of the net to make the score 1-0.
Indy Eleven kept battling for their impressive home crowd of over 10,000 fans and their work paid off in the 74' when Blake Smith chased down a long early ball and hit a soft roller across goal from left to right that Scorpions 'keeper David Bingham unfortunately couldn't get to as he was following the play to his right.
Each side had additional chances as time wound down to break the 1-1 tie, but once again for the Scorpions, magic happened right before the final whistle. San Antonio has taken maximum points from each of their four road matches this season.
Next week the Scorpions close out the pre-World Cup schedule at home against the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers with a chance to win the NASL's Spring Season Championship (pending the result of Minnesota vs Tampa Bay) and then will travel to Frisco to play FC Dallas in the U.S. Open Cup on June 17th. Indy, meanwhile, ends the Spring NASL season on the road next weekend against Atlanta.
