RECAP Stars Begin Season with 1-0 Shutout Win
October 8, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Lincoln Stars News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Lincoln Stars (1-0-0) started the season on the right foot with a 1-0 shutout victory over the Muskegon Lumberjacks (0-1-0) on Friday night at the Ice Box.
Momentum tended to stay in Muskegon's favor during a larger portion of the first period compared to the Stars, but the start of a strong night for goaltender began with a highlight reel save on a Lumberjacks breakaway. The Stars would start to gain their momentum in the second period kicked off by a fight from Dominick Mersch in the first minute followed by continued offensive pressure in the offensive zone and a strong transition game.
The breakthrough between both sides finally came in the third period. At 9:58, a Lumberjacks player gloved a puck in their own crease, forcing the first penalty shot of the season. Stars forward Devlin McCabe converted on a wrist shot from above the crease to edge the Stars ahead, 1-0. That goal proved to be the differential needed, but the Lumberjacks did not go home without a fight. Despite a pulled Lumberjacks goaltender and a late power play, the Stars held on for the one-goal victory.
(1-0-0) earned his first career USHL shutout while Lumberjacks netminder Adam Brizgala (0-1-0) was given the loss. The Stars are back in action at the Ice Box on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7:35 p.m. when they host the Des Moines Buccaneers for Pink In The Rink.
