Real Salt Lake To Receive Muscular Dystrophy Association Of Utah's "Athletic Achievement Award"

SANDY, Utah (Monday, March 29, 2010) - The 2009 MLS Cup Champion Real Salt Lake will be recognized for its recent achievements tomorrow, Tuesday, March 30, 2010, when the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Utah honors the team with its "Athletic Achievement Award" during the 2010 Muscle Team Bash at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

As part of the 2010 "Muscle Team," Real Salt Lake will join this year's Humanitarian Award recipient, Rich Parkinson, President and CEO of Associated Food Stores, in helping MDA raise the much needed funds to provide research and patient services for over 45 neuromuscular diseases. Real Salt Lake and all honorees seek to greatly assist the MDA in raising the funds needed in order find the cause of and treatments and cures for neuromuscular diseases. RSL hopes to able to make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by muscular dystrophy through their support of the Muscle Team Bash.

Past Team members include: RSL founder and co-owner Dave Checketts, former Univ. of Utah basketball star Pace Manning, Missy Marlow, former Philadelphia Eagle Chad Lewis, current BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall, U of U football coach Kyle Whittingham, U of U women's gymnastics coaches Greg and Megan Marsden and Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan. Each of these personalities have been able to make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by muscular dystrophy through their support of the Muscle Team Bash.

Fresh off Saturday night's 3-0 win at San Jose, Real Salt Lake returns to action this Thursday, April 1 against the Houston Dynamo at 7:00 p.m., LIVE on ESPN2. The team returns to Utah for its lone April home game on Saturday, April 10 at 7:00 p.m. against Seattle Sounders FC, during which the MLS Cup 2009 Championship Banner will be raised and a pre-game ring ceremony for the players will occur. Rio Tinto Stadium's "Carnival Real" festivities on the East Lawn (bordering State Street) continue in 2010, opening two hours prior to kickoff on Opening Day and 60 minutes prior to kickoff for most other RSL games.

Real Salt Lake returns 12 of the 14 players who appeared in last November's MLS Cup 2009 victory in Seattle against Los Angeles, including Cup MVP Nick Rimando, Captain Kyle Beckerman and 2009 RSL Golden Boot winner Robbie Findley, each of whom participated in the U.S. National Team's January and February camps. RSL's 2009 Team MVP Nat Borchers returns, as does his partner in central defense, imposing Colombian DF Jamison Olave. Argentine playmaker Javier Morales and forward Fabián Espíndola return once again, as do DF Chris Wingert, fan-favorite Andy Williams (RSL's lone player remaining from the team's inaugural season) and DF Robbie Russell and MF Ned Grabavoy, each of whom converted game-winning penalty kicks in the 2009 Conference and League Finals. Young RSL stars on the rise back for 2010 include MF Will Johnson, DF Tony Beltran, FW Pablo Campos and MF Jean Alexandre.
