November 22, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, Utah - Real Salt Lake confirms today that the Club's 2022 home opener will be played against Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. MT at Rio Tinto Stadium. RSL kicks off its 18th season in Major League Soccer one week earlier, traveling to face Houston Dynamo FC, on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. MT, in the League's Opening Weekend.
RSL enters its 18th MLS campaign with a 7-1-9 (Win-Loss-Draw) record all-time in home-opening matches dating back to its inaugural 2005 season, with a 6-1-6 (W-L-D) all-time mark in those held at Rio Tinto Stadium. The 2021 season saw RSL earn an emphatic 3-1 win in its home opener over Sporting Kansas City, riding a brace from FW Rubio Rubin and a third goal from eventual RSL 2021 Golden Boot winner Damir Kreilach to vanquish one of its key rivals.
All-time in MLS regular-season play against Seattle, Real Salt Lake is 10-1-3 on Utah soil, unbeaten at home against the Sounders since May 28, 2011, a 2-1 road result for the "Rave Green." During the decade since, RSL has posted a dominant 10-0-1 record at home against Seattle, including a 1-0 victory last September courtesy another game-winner from 2021 Team MVP Kreilach.
2022 RSL season tickets can be purchased by calling 844-REAL-TIX, or by visiting RSL.com/tickets. Also, RSL Holiday Vouchers are on sale now! Real Salt Lake next takes the pitch tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 8:30 p.m. MT at Lumen Field in Seattle against the Sounders in Round One of the Audi 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs, the fourth postseason series between the clubs (2011, 2012, 2019 and 2021). Tuesday's match will be broadcast nationally on FS1 and Fox Deportes, with radio coverage locally on ESPN 700 and 102.3 FM La Gran D. Additional coverage occurs on www.RSL.com and the Club's social media channels.
Real Salt Lake fans have two options across the Valley Tuesday to gather and support this year's Audi 2021 MLS Cup Playoff trip to Seattle, as both Beer Bar downtown (presented by Michelob Ultra) and the Rio Tinto Stadium Interform Club (presented by Ford) offer celebrity guests, prize packs and giveaways, along with U92 spinners E-Rock and DJ Bangarang to kick the parties off at 6:30 p.m. MT in each location.
The Audi 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs appearance this season marks Real Salt Lake's third in the last four campaigns, missing out in 2020, and RSL's 11th in the last 14 years (on the outside looking in in 2015, 2017, 2020). The Utah-based MLS side joined Seattle, Kansas City and Atlanta as the only Major League Soccer clubs with postseason wins in at least two of the last three MLS Cup Playoff editions, entering this year's tourney.

RSL's overall performance in Sandy remains dominant over its history, with a 123-35-55 won/loss/tie mark in MLS action since moving into the suburban Salt Lake venue 13 years ago. Across all competitions, RSL is now 158-51-71 (W-L-T) at the place known affectionately as the "RioT," with a 6-2-3 mark in the MLS Cup Playoffs, 8-1-2 in CONCACAF Champions League, 8-4-2 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and 0-1-0 in Leagues Cup. In international exhibition play, RSL is only 13-8-9 (W-L-T).
That perennially-consistent excellence on Utah soil provides RSL fans an incredible value proposition in North American major-league sports, with 2022 season tickets starting at approximately $14/match for a club that has proven to win nearly 77% of its home games over 13 seasons.
