Real Salt Lake Faces Tough FC Dallas in Playoffs
October 25, 2010 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, Utah (Monday, October 25, 2010) - With a successful run in the CONCACAF Champions League group stage play and the best regular season in team history in the books, Real Salt Lake now gets to focus solely on the biggest task on its 2010 calendar - the defense of last year's MLS Cup championship. The much-anticipated "Reign of RSL" will begin for Real Salt Lake (15-4-11, West #2 seed) this Saturday, October 30, when the Utahans will head south to Frisco, Texas, to take on FC Dallas (12-4-14, West #3 seed) in Leg One of their Western Conference Semifinal Series.
Saturday's contest from Pizza Hut Park in the North Dallas suburbs is set for a 3:00 p.m. MT kickoff and will be televised nationwide on Fox Soccer Channel (coverage begins with the "MLS on FSC" pre-game show at 2:30 p.m.). Fans can also follow the action live on RSL's radio partners - "Classic Country" 99.1-FM (English), ESPN Deportes 1600-AM, and Homero 106.1-FM (Spanish) - and the club's official Twitter feed, found at www.Twitter.com/RealSaltLake. In addition, details on the Official RSL Watch Party for Saturday's playoff encounter will be released by the club on Tuesday.
The Western Conference Semifinal Series is contested as an aggregate goals series in which no weight is placed on away goals. That means, should Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas be tied in overall goals across the two games at the end of regulation of Leg 2 in Sandy, the squads will square off in a 30-minute mini-game (played in its entirety) to determine a winner. Should that end even, the teams will then decide advancement to the Western Conference Championship by kicks from the penalty spot.
It was Real Salt Lake ending FC Dallas' League-record-tying 19-game undefeated streak and MLS record 12-game road unbeaten streak just over a week ago at Rio Tinto Stadium on Oct. 16, the Utah side's 2-0 win (highlights) also extending RSL's League-record home undefeated run to 25 games. That result evened the season series at one win apiece, as FC Dallas' own 2-0 victory over RSL (highlights) at Pizza Hut Park on July 17 has stood as the only blemish on RSL's League slate in its last 25 games (14-1-10). Real Salt Lake will be looking to vanquish some demons in "Big D," as the Claret-and-Cobalt have yet to take a point from eight contests at FC Dallas in regular season play since joining MLS in 2005, the last seven of those matches taking place at Pizza Hut Park.
