
Real Salt Lake & Rio Tinto Stadium to Host World's Longest Pinewood Derby Race Saturday

SANDY, Utah (Thursday, August 26, 2010) - Real Salt Lake and Rio Tinto Stadium are proud to partner with the Boy Scouts of America, Rio Tinto, and Taber Extrusions in hosting the World's Longest Pinewood Derby Race, set to take place this Saturday, August 28 at Rio Tinto Stadium from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. MT.
Along with the race, there will be activity booths and bounce houses for children of all ages to at Saturday's event, which is FREE and open to the public. The Pinewood Derby portion of the event is open to all boys, girls, and adults that have a car available for racing on a track that will exceed 340 feet in length. With at least six cars expected to go head-to-head in races lasting between 20-30 seconds, the track could handle in excess of 4,000 cars during Saturday's big event.
"This track will be certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest and fastest ever constructed," remarked Mike Plowman, Field Director of the Utah National Parks Council, Boy Scouts of America.
A $15 race entry fee will include a commemorative patch and a ticket to one of four upcoming Real Salt Lake home contests: Sept. 15 v. Toronto FC (CONCACAF Champions League), Sept. 18 v. Chicago, Sept. 25 v. Colorado, or Oct. 16 v. FC Dallas. Racers interested in putting their Pinewood Derby cars to the test on the record-breaking track may register in advance online at www.utahscouts.org/pinewoodderby or in person at the stadium on Saturday.
In addition to contributions made by Rio Tinto, Real Salt Lake, and Taber Extrusions, the BSA was assisted with the engineering and design of the track by Tom Dickson, founder of Blendtec and longtime supporter and BSA volunteer. Dickson, best known for his "Will it Blend?" Infomercials in which he demonstrates unusual items (such as iPods and cell phones) being pulverized, is an internet sensation and has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Today with Meredith Vieira. A recent segment, showing the iPhone being blended into iDust, has received over 8 million hits on You Tube. Dickson will be at the event and will blend a pinewood derby car.
