SANDY, Utah (Tuesday) - Real Monarchs SLC (5-9-4, 19 pts) return to action Wednesday night in California against the club's chief rival, Sacramento Republic FC, with the Utah side seeking redemption after a pair of dramatic one-goal losses to the 2014 USL champions only three weeks ago. Kickoff at Bonney Field is set for 9:00 p.m. MT, with fans able to watch via RSL.com or USLsoccer.com.
Head Coach Freddy Juarez' team started its second USL campaign strong out of the gates with a 2-0-1 record through the first three matches. Even with an 11-game road trip and a stoppage-time loss in the club's Rio Tinto Stadium return last Saturday, the Monarchs' record has moved to 5-9-4, continuing to hold onto 9th place in the Western Conference with 12 games remaining on the season, including a glut on Utah soil.
Following Wednesday's jaunt to the California capitol, the Monarchs' next league game will be on Friday, July 22 in the fourth and final "On Tour" contest, hosting Arizona United at Clyde Field on the Utah Valley University campus at 7:00 p.m. MT, prior to RSL's "Viernes de Futbol" Pioneer Day celebration against the San Jose Earthquakes at 9:00 p.m. MT that night at Rio Tinto Stadium.
GK Lalo Fernandez, on loan from Real Salt Lake, has played 16 matches with the Monarchs this season, posting a 1.13 goals against average to go with four shutouts and a 4-9-3 record. He is currently tied for first in saves in the USL with a total of 55 saves and earned USL Player of the Week 10 days ago after his eight-save shutout in a 1-0 win over Colorado Springs. That marked the second time this season the Monarchs have earned a USL Player of the Week honor after Ricardo Velazco did the same earlier this season. Fernandez also has history with Vancouver, when he made five stops to stake Vancouver Whitecaps FC to its first loss of the season in a 1-0 Monarchs victory on June 4.
