SANDY, Utah - Real Monarchs draw 1-1 at home against Portland Timbers 2 Saturday night, after another late goal conceded forces Head Coach Freddy Juarez' young team into sharing the points. FW Emery Welshman scored his first goal as a Monarch early on in the match, but T2 battled back as former RSL man Will Johnson assisted Rundell Winchester on the late equalizer.

In the 8th minute, Monarchs MF Fito Ovalle slotted a lovely through ball in behind the defense, finding Welshman for the shot to beat Timbers GK Jake Gleeson.

Welshman and MF Ricardo Velazco continued to test the T2 defense, as Velazco's 27' shot deflected off a defender and dropped back to him for a second shot on goal; the former FC Tucson man saw his second offering sail straight to Gleeson.

Timbers FW Karlton Belmar, who scored a brace in the team's first meeting back in March, tested the home defense repeatedly with his speed but the back line held the offside trap to keep the speedy forward quiet for most of the night. Belmar's only real chance came in the 40th minute, when he beat Monarchs DF Phanuel Kavita, only to be foiled by GK Lalo Fernandez.

Monarchs were quietly efficient in the second half, seemingly comfortable with the lead, prior to the late equalizer by the visitors. Ovalle turned the ball over and T2 seized the chance, as Will Johnson crossed a beautiful ball in behind the defense and found Winchester for the decisive half volley.

The next match for the Monarchs will come next Sunday, April 24th on the road against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2.
