LOVELAND, CO. - The Reading Royals scored four straight goals, three of them coming on the power play, to defeat the Colorado Eagles 4-3 at the Budweiser Events Center on Wednesday. The Royals enjoyed 10 power plays on the evening, going 3-10 on the man-advantage, while Colorado finished the evening with a mark of 1-2 with the extra attacker.
Colorado would start the game by jumping out to a lead at the 8:36 mark of the first period, as forward Luke Salazar extended his goal-scoring streak to four consecutive contests, as he beat Reading goaltender Mark Dekanich with a wrister from the circle to give Colorado the 1-0 advantage.
Heading into the second period, Eagles forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel jammed home a rebound in the crease to extend the Eagles lead to 2-0 just 5:29 into the middle frame. Less than five minutes later, the Royals would notch their first power-play goal of the evening when forward Robbie Czarnik fielded the puck off a deflection and snapped it past Eagles goalie Clarke Saunders to cut the Eagles lead to 2-1.
The Royals would open up the third period with a quick strike on the power play to knot the game at 2-2 when forward Steven Swavely spun and fired a wrister to light the lamp just 3:10 into the final period of regulation. Reading would claim its first lead of the night 2:09 later when forward Chris McCarthy launched a shot that hit off the left leg pad of Saunders and landed in the back of the net, giving Reading the 3-2 edge. Saunders left the game after surrendering the goal to McCarthy with an apparent injury, sending emergency back-up goaltender Tate Maris into the contest.
The Royals would again find themselves on the power play and forward Mike Pereira would capitalize, beating Maris top-shelf with a wrist shot to make it a 4-2 Reading lead at the 6:08 mark of the third period. The Eagles would finally put the brakes on the Royals, as forward Darryl Bootland drove in a shot from the slot on the power play to bring the Eagles to within one, slicing the Royals lead to 4-3 with 3:55 remaining in regulation.
The remainder of the period would see a bevy of penalties assessed to both teams, ultimately preventing the Eagles from completing the comeback, despite a furious effort down the stretch, as the Eagles fell by a final score of 4-3. Colorado would finish the evening with a season-high 85 penalty minutes, while Reading generated 46 PIM's of their own.
