Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals organization is proud to be a teammate of the Berks County Public Libraries' 2003 summer reading program, which is themed "Get in the Game @ Your Library!" The program, which kicks off on Monday, June 16, offers children and young adults a free opportunity to build strong minds and bodies using a variety of mediums such as sports, games, songs, reading and crafts.

"We are proud to be an active member in the lives of young people, especially through programs such as ‘Get in the Game @ Your Library!' which sharpens reading skills," said Royals General Manager Ray Delia. "The puck is in the crease. Get in the game and go for the goal. Join the team at your local library."

The Royals' mascot, Slapshot #01, who is featured on program posters, also challenges readers to join the team to exceed the 2003 goal of 10,000 participating children. Berks County Public Libraries reports that last summer the county had over 9,500 children read almost 325,000 books, which averages 34 books read per child.

Children of all ages may read or be read to, and they will instantly become MVP's (Most Valuable Players) when they turn in their Reading Score Cards at their local library to receive various prizes. These cards, available at all public libraries in the county, may be turned in from June 16, through Saturday, August 23. One lucky player will score really big by winning the countywide grand prize, a new computer with a DVD player. This prize is made possible by a donation from the Friends of Berks County Public Libraries. As an added incentive, the Royals will distribute team merchandise to each public library in the county to raffle off to participating readers.

"Research has shown that children who read over the summer months retain valuable skills that they have learned during the school year," said Susan Magee-Bibi, MLS, Children's Coordinator for Berks County Public Libraries. "So don't let the children you know sit on the sidelines being a bench warmer this summer. Run them on over to your local public library and get them their Score Cards, rule sheets and program schedules. Then sit back and watch them have a championship summer as they become part of an important game plan."
