Rookie Roundup
The Royals have five rookies on the squad this season, all of whom are college graduates. Steve Johnson (Minnesota graduate) spent four seasons in Minneapolis, skating in 119 games (6g, 34a). Adam Larkin appeared in a pair of games with the Royals last season as well as seven games with the Adirondack Thunder. Larkin completed four seasons at Yale and was the top scoring blue liner his junior season. Forward Jack Riley (Mercyhurst) tallied five points (2g, 3a) last season during his five games with the Royals. He was Mercyhurst Captain his junior and senior seasons. Forward Bo Pieper appeared in three games with the Adirondack Thunder last season after completing his college career with Quinnipiac University. Scott Dornbrock (Miami) was claimed on waivers by the Royals earlier this week.
Looking for ten and two straight
The Royals are seeking their tenth straight postseason appearance, while the Railers made the playoffs last season in their inaugural campaign. During the middle of last season, Worcester trailed Reading by 13 points for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Railers, who trailed Wheeling by 17 points, ousted the Nailers from the 2018 Kelly Cup Playoffs in the final week of the regular season. The Railers' run to the fourth and final seed in the North Division started Jan. 26, when the team defeated Quad City to begin a 22-8-1-2 stretch. Mitch Gillam won 12 of his final 13 starts to knock Wheeling from the playoffs.
Worcester and Reading were both eliminated in the opening round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs.
Milan in the box
Defenseman Dan Milan visited the penalty box twice during the Royals home opener and is no stranger to a trip to the sin bin. Milan recorded 142 PIM last season with the Wheeling Nailers and had six fighting majors. In 313 ECHL games, Milan has collected 543 PIM.
Scoring first
Reading struck first in the 2-1 overtime loss to Worcester. The Royals scored the first goal of the game 46 times last season with a record of 32-9-5-0 when doing so. This was the most ever by the club in a regular season.
OT streak
The Royals opened a second straight season by requiring extra minutes to decide a victor. Last season, the Royals defeated Adirondack, 5-4, in overtime opening night. They went into overtime the following two games, opening the season with three consecutive overtime wins.
